Preventing Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes and the facts..

More than 3 million Australians have or are at risk of diabetes. Worldwide – 246 million people have diabetes (1)
Diabetes is the sixth highest cause of death by disease in Australia.

People with diabetes are twice as likely to have high blood pressure and also are more likely to have elevated blood fats e.g. cholesterol, triglycerides.

They are twice as likely to have cardiovascular disease, e.g. heart disease and stroke.

One in four Australian adults has either diabetes or impaired glucose metabolism.

Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease.

An estimated 2.1 million Australians are at risk of diabetes .

One person is diagnosed every seven minutes .
About 1 million Australians are diagnosed with diabetes. However, for every one diagnosed, another is undiagnosed .

Based on this, by 2014, Diabetes Australia-NSW expects the number of people with diabetes to total approximately 4.5 million (7)

This is scary stuff .

check out what it costs and the burden on our economy and health care systems.

Type 2 diabetes costs Australia $3 billion a year
The cost of diabetes to the community for a person with no complications is $9,625 a year
For a person with complications, the cost to the community is $15,850
The 4% of people who have diagnosed diabetes account for 12% of the total health costs in Australia.

This is all quoted from the diabetes Australia -NSW.

Apparently there is no cure for this so what about Prevention ?????

Here are the signs :

kidney disease, weight loss or weight gain, cuts and bruises don't heal, incontinence, thirst, extreme hunger, numbness in hands and feet, fluid build up, tiredness, vision changes, urinary tract , skin infections, just to name a few.

other things to watch for :

20% over body weight

high blood pressure, HDL cholesterol is too low, triglycerides too high, blood sugar irregularities, sleep deprivations effecting hormones.

Just to clarify :

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when there is too much glucose in the blood because the body is not producing insulin or not using insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone needed for glucose to enter the cells and be converted to energy.

How to help yourselves?

Make sure you get regular blood tests for hormones , cholesterol, blood sugars etc

kinesiology sessions can help look at why you might be tired?

why you put on weight or cant lose weight?

Your blood sugar levels , circulation , hormonal imbalances and sleep issues.

Look at your diet , make some changes.. no sugar, no sugar.

minimum alcohol, eat fruit and veg, low glycemic foods, low trans fats, eat fish. If allergic to fish try Salba seeds or bread which contain omega 3.

stop smoking

exercise. 5 sessions a wk. walking pace not a stroll.

avoid: high fructose drinks

sugar substitutes( not good for brain). use stevia instead.

herbs that can help.

Gymnema sylvestre: Ayurvedic remedy that's helps insulin production

Bilberry: fruits that contain flavonoids

cinnamon: improves ability of type 2 diabetes to respond to insulin

fenugreek: fibre slows absorption rates and reduces blood glucose.

Go on a weightloss program, get some expert nutrition advise.

Hope that helps :)

Happiness!

I recently went on a health retreat and one of the topics we talked about was "Happiness".

I have found that one of the many reasons clients come to a kinesiologist might be to figure out what is stopping them from being happy or how to bring more happiness into their life.

When asked sometimes what is happiness, it can be hard to describe or many people say " I will just know when I am happier, I will just feel it"

The wikipedia describes happiness as the following :
Happiness is a state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, pleasure, or joy.

While direct measurement of happiness presents challenges, tools such as The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire is available to check you happiness ratings.

Give it a Try!

http://www.meaningandhappiness.com/oxford-happiness-questionnaire/214/

These are 10 points that you may wish to take on board in your pursuit to happiness ..

1/- Communication and community = connection
We need relationships in our life to help us feel a level of connection to each other

2/- Creativity
We are all creators, life becomes opportunities

3/- Reflection and time out
Pray , meditate, journal. This all helps us find ourselves and therefore a connection with self.

4/- Responsibility and involvement.
We all need to be responsible for our own happiness. This builds courage and strength.

5/- Routine
Gives us balance and control

6/-Self respect
Recognise your own values and worth and then you can see others.

7/- Positive ways of seeing
How do we view things? How do you respond?

8/- Short memory.
Don't keep the past alive. Let go to create a new.

9/- Renew
Acts of purification.

10/- Play
Natural instinct. be childlike not childish. Enjoy life!!!!

Inner Power and Protection

I love this picture of explosions of positive energy. she looks so alive but at peace all at the same time.

A human is aware of his outer power when he/she looks without , around . He /she is conscious of inner power when he/she dives deep within.

The inner world of our selves can fulfil us and fill us back up.

To get to the empowered parts of ourselves we need to disempower the negative parts.

* We need to become good listener of ourselves.

* Be more present and still

* Have a clear mind

* Create a space from the old self

How do we do this?

# Give yourself some time out , me time to get to know yourself better

# Time out in nature

# Doing things that make your heart sing

# Relax/meditate ,practice love; bring the feeling of love in. Affirm it into your life. Go for a walk, see beauty around you

# Not giving away your time and energy to distractions or control /power struggles.

If you have read the "Celestine prophesy" you would be familiar with the power struggles we play out in our lives.

Here is a reminder :

Passive

Poor me: Is always seeing the negative, looking for problems, always talking about being too busy and too tired, makes you feel guilty if you don’t solve their problems, pulls attention by sighing, trembling, crying, victim stance.

Aloof: Tends to be distant, busy, away from home, not too interested in your life, unresponsive, secretive, and preoccupied. These types want the energy of you asking but don’t trust you enough to answer.

Aggressive

Intimidator: on the verge of exploding, threatening, strict, gives orders, inflexible, angry, self centered, wants to make you afraid. This people lack the most energy.

Interrogator: probed to see what you were doing, critical, undermining, infallible logic, sarcasm, monitors you can be skeptical, and sarcastic, self-righteous, perfectionist.

We play out these control dramas in our life in order to feel in control. Control dramas are seen as a way of gaining energy from the other party involved. The trick is to realize when you are acting out one of these dramas in your life. You need to name it.
Ask yourself:
What is the control drama showing me that I most need to know right now?
Do I need to set better limits in the beginning of encounters?
Do I take events personally when they are not really about me?

What to do:

change, accept it fully, walk away, laugh at it, have courage to move above it and master it.

When you do this it means you no longer need the attention from this and therefore not needing this energy anymore. Be willing to give this energy up.
I will no longer participate in this.
Fewer expectations.
I can be a model instead.

Connect with divine energy to fill ourselves back up from the power struggles.
By connecting back in to source energy we are more connected to our higher self. This then gives us a feeling of lightness, energy. Our future looks brighter, perception is enhanced. When we are connected and filled up, answers come to us out of the blue. They just appear.

You have to feel well to be able to open up to source energy more.

Once we give energy back to ourselves you will find that you will have more clarity about who you really are. Isn't that inner power in it self?

check this out for feel good stuff.

Time : performed by Sir Lawerence Olivier

Thinking in Color
Originally uploaded by ripplemdk

I come across this poem and performance and thought it was great and wanted to share it with everyone.

It reflects on the mind and the powers of the universe.

Time

Stand before me on the sign of infinity,
all you of the earth.
With the granting of the law of provination
comes the application of change.

I will give you the key.
And with this knowledge, please realise,
comes the responsibility of sharing it.
I will show you the way.

It's very simple. Throughout the universe
there is order.

In the movement of the planets, in nature
and in the functioning of the human mind.
A mind that is in its natural state of order,
is in harmony with the universe
and such a mind is timeless.

Your life is an expression of your mind.
You are the creator of your own Universe -
For as a human being, you are free to will whatever
state of being you desire through the use of your
thoughts and words.

There is great power there.

It can be a blessing or a curse -
It's entirely up to you.
For the quality of your life is brought about
by the quality of your thinking -
think about that.

Thoughts produce actions -
look at what you're thinking.

See the pettiness and the envy and the greed and the
fear and all the other attitudes that cause
you pain and discomfort.

Realize that the one thing you have absolute
control over is your attitude.

See the effect that it has on those around you.
For each life is linked to all life
and your words carry with them chain reactions
like a stone that is thrown into a pond.

If your thinking is in order,
your words will flow directly from the heart
creating ripples of love.

If you truly want to change your world, my friends,
you must change your thinking.

Reason is your greatest tool,
it creates an atmosphere of understanding,
which leads to caring which is love.

Choose your words with care.
Go forth ......with love

Pain is it body or mind or both?

Pain Body
Originally uploaded by trav1s

I recently went to a nutritional seminar all about natural solutions for chronic pain.

PAIN IS INEVITABLE , SUFFERING IS OPTIONAL . Hindu spiritual

what is pain?

According to wikipedia , pain is seen as physical pain . chronic pain is something that last for more than 3 months. It is a typical sensory experience that may be described as unpleasant awareness of stimulus or bodily harm.
Essential pain is felt in the brain.

Individuals experience pain through daily hurts and aches, injuries and through illness.

Did you know that there is a "war against pain" and pain is winning.
As many as 16% of pain sufferers want to die.

This year is was reported that chronic lower back pain had increased by a staggering 250% over the last 14 years.

Did you also know that pain medication NSAIDS are the 15th leading causes of death in the US. ( and this is meant to help us ?)

Did you know in Australia pain relievers are the most commonly used medication. That must mean a lot of people are in pain.

Did you also know that chronic pain patients can often be prescribed anti depressants. Many neurotransmitters have a powerful regulating affect on pain perception . Is is depression or is it pain ?

Is pain just a warning signal of something else that is really going on in the body/mind or spirit?

common causes of pain

Trauma
Auto immunity
structural disorders
exercise induced
stress and tension
referred pain.... the list can go on....

some of the ones I deal with daily within my kinesiology clinic are:

headaches, sinusitis, gastro intestinal disorders, pelvic , back and structural pains, sleep disturbances, depression,

what are the drivers behind pain?

psychological
tissue dysfunction
tissue acidity
chronic infection
hormones
toxicity

Besides making sure you eat right and not exposed to toxins and get the inflammation and acid levels down to help inflammation and tissue repair... we also need to look at our stress levels and emotional and mental pain ?

so can kinesiology help pain , absolutely...

Population bases studies have demonstrated that distress can lead to pain and pain to distress. Is there a vicious cycle going on here ?

An inseparable part of pain management is the state of mind of the client. Pain puts clients at greater risk of developing depression , anxiety and pessimistic thinking patters. In turn this dysfunction of mood and cognitive makes the perception of pain worse.

Positive attitude , being proactive and learning healthy coping mechanism are all important topics to look at.

As Louise hay ( best selling book, You can heal your life) says" if your willing to do the mental work , almost anything can heal"

If you don't know who Louise Hay is , why not check this out.

If you or someone you know is experiencing pain on some level it is an sign that something is out of balance.

Do you need to live with this pain, its up to you ? lets hope not :)

Winter blues

Winter II
Originally uploaded by Flamejob1

Its a time to replenish our energies and renew our strength to burst out into spring ready to approach our goals again with energy and wisdom. Without this time we may burn out and and not have enough reserves to fulfill our function and destiny.

Winter is associated with Yin energy and governs the kidneys , bladder and adrenal glands.

The emotions are fear and depression.

when the water element is out of balance we may experience fear in every aspect of our life: relationships, career, finances and personal growth.

Hints to get through the winter blues

* Come in for a kinesiology session if feeling fatigue, fearful and a touch of seasonal depression.

* Get lots of rest and time for reflection

* If feeling depressed the following supplements might help:

Vitamin B , eases moods and supports mental stability.

Omega 3- fish or salmon oil, reduces mood wings and improves memory .

Vitamin C, supports adrenals, immune and neurotransmitters,

Zinc, ease depression and moodiness

cal/mag, helps insomnia, and has a sedative effort.

* Get more sunlight or take some Vitamin D.

* Make sure you don't stop exercising as this will keep your mood under control.

Couple session using Kinesiology

Kinesiology and couples

"Love is looking at the same mountain from different angels".
Quoted by Paulo Coelho from the book titled , The Valkyries

"Love is not to be found in someone else but in ourselves; we simply awaken it. But in order to do that, we need the other person"
Paulo Coelho , Eleven minutes

I love these quotes by Paulo Coelho about Love...

........................................................................................................................................

It is often seen as only one on one work but did you know you can work on relationship issues together as well as separately.?

why not come in together and get your relationship issues dealt with.

why would this be different to a one on one session?

The goal behind a couple session is to create a real space to look at the truth and to balance energies together so growth and understanding and healing can happen as a team effort.

I find that sometimes working on a individual level about relationships can only cover one part of the relationship. why not take it a step further and get both parties balanced. I can find that one person can be doing all the work and the other person in the relationship may be being left behind.

what others are saying :

"the couple session allows for much more concentrated, partner focused session, which is specific to every facet of the relationship conscious and unconscious. Often during an individual session, you work on self development and issues surrounding your relationship may arise, however, ultimately this is still up to the individual following on from that session to be proactive in communicating those changes. However during the couple sessions, both parties are present therefore, both parties are responsible and accountable for acknowledging and making the changes they need to make to fulfil a common goal."

"Couples sessions through Kinesiology are an effective medium for unearthing deeper, underlying issues within the partnership. Couples sessions demonstrate that each person contribute in their own way to disharmony within the relationship and therefore, makes the individual accountable and responsible in healing that relationship and moving forward. This ultimately reduces the ‘blame game".

Couple session are now available at auricfields kinesiology in Toorak.

Please contact me by email auricfields@bigpond.com or phone 0407 516 921 for further information regarding session together and costing.

Have you heard of the " 5 love languages"?

You might be interested in working out your "Love language" together.

Thanks to Dr Gary Chapman world renowned speaker, author and counselor.

Gary quotes: At the heart of every relationship –rests the same core longing: all people need to feel loved.

Just to highlight the love languages you might wish to discuss with your partner.

Quality Time refers to spending time together as a couple. People who have this as their love language feel loved when they are taken out on special dates, when their spouse clears the calendar for them, or when the television is turned off in order to have a conversation.

Others prefer Words of Affirmation as a way to be shown love. Telling your spouse how you appreciate them, encouraging them, and general words of praise and acceptance all show your love.

If Gifts is your spouse’s love language, then you need to understand that for them, gifts are not simply material objects — they are expressions of your love.

If your spouse’s love language is Acts of Service, they will appreciate your help more than anything. Give them a night off from cooking or other household chores. Repair that leaky faucet. Help them with the yard work. Prepare them a nice lunch to take to work.

Some people prefer Physical Touch as their love language. A simple touch on the arm, hug or back rub will convey your love to them.

How to support STRESS, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

I just attended a GNLD seminar on Anxiety, stress and depression and thought this information needs to get out to the public.

Did you know the number one disabling illness in Australia today is neither cancer or heart disease . Its Depression.

One in five Australians will experience depression in their lifetime. This is more than one million people in one year.

Information taken from http://www.beyondblue.org.au/

As you can see these conditions are very much part of our society and kinesiology has a very good success rate treating these conditions whether you are on medication or not.

Besides balancing any stresses, anxiety's or depressions through using kinesiology, why not support yourself throughout the year with nutritional supplementation.

Kinesiology comes from a holistic approach to your well-being.

One must consider the entirety of a person or client, by adopting a holistic approach to their well-being. They must possess an awareness and sensitivity to the significance of other dimensions, that encompass and influence their clients’ life such as: their intellectual, social, cultural, physical, moral and other aspects of human development.

Here are some handy hints to consider for all three areas : stress, anxiety and depression

Tre-en-en( whole grains and lipids)

Improves well-being, energy, supports stress hormones, adrenals, blood sugars

Vitamin B complex

Eases mood swings, supports mental stability, helps think straight, for when its all too much and you cant face life have a vitamin B

Vitamin C

Supports immunity during stress, need for neurotransmitters, supports stress hormones

Cal-mag

Nature's sedative, fore tearfulness, irritability, nervousness and insomnia

For Anxiety 6 at night time.

AUTUMN IS A GREAT TIME TO DO A DETOX

DETOXIFICATION FOR HEALTH

I have been doing a few courses of late and I thought I would share some interesting information that may help those that are interested in nutrition as part of their well- being and as an added tool to complement future kinesiology sessions .

Detoxification

We are not only what we eat, but also what we drink, breath and touch.

Why detox ?

The body has mechanism for eliminating toxins , but if the detoxification pathways are overwhelmed you may consume and absorb more toxins than the body is able to get rid of.

You may wish to ask yourself some of these questions and if the answer is yes to more than one of the below questions you may wish to ask your self if its time to do a detox?

Are you often tired?
Do you suffer from digestive complaints: bloating, diarrhoea, constipation
Do you suffer from headaches?
Do you get muscle aches and pains?
Poor short term memory?
Allergies?
Depression , anxiety and or mood swings?

Did you know that toxic exposure comes in many forms?

The gut: food, water, pesticides, heavy metals, food additives, chargilled meats

Lungs: air pollution, petrochemicals, heavy metals, cigarette smoke

Skin: chemicals, cosmetics, clothes ( industrial chemicals)

Occupations..

Did you know you work environment could be toxic? To name a few of these toxic occupations that may be harmful to your health:

Aluminum production ,boot and shoe industry, carpentry, coal, furniture and cabinet makers, hairdressers, steel, painters, printing, rubber and textile industries.

If you have been involved in any of these industries you may wish to think about doing a detox.

Handy Hints

Whats in your area?
Find out what toxins are located in your neighbourhood

http://www.npi.gov.au/

For your information:

I am presently in week 4 of a 6 week program and would be happy to talk to you about the physical and emotional aspects of doing a detox... and where to order the program from.

The one auricfields recommends is by metagenics :

http://metagenics.com.au/downloads/Patient_Detox_Booklet.pdf

Seminars:

I completed a 1/2 day seminar with metagenics a little while ago on detoxification and thought it was time to try it out myself...

Up to date: I feel very alert and have even lost some weight.. ( so detoxification program can also help in this area of well being too :)

In regards to detoxification on a kinesiology level the main organs you are working with are Kidney and Liver. Kidney talks to us about fears, anxiety and how we support ourselves. Liver talks to us about anger issues which can be very toxic over time.

so dont be surprised when doing a detox that emotional, mental issues may come to the surface and they may well be very old issues that you thought "havent I dealt with these issues" .. "oh no, not again".. yes ..

if you find this happening whilst doing a detox thats when kinesiology can balance your body to gently process whats coming up and to help your body work effectively whilst on the products that you are using for the detox.

Until next time .. health and happiness :)
